Tensions Flare in House of Representatives Over Tax Reform Bills

Members of the House of Representatives engaged in a heated debate on Tuesday over President Bola Tinubu's controversial Tax Reform Bills.

The tension arose when Akin Rotimi, the House spokesperson and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, made a comment while attempting to present a report on Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring in the absence of Committee Chair Boma Goodhead.

Introducing himself, Rotimi said, “My name is Akin Rotimi Jr. I represent the people of Ekiti North comprising Ikole and Oye Local Governments. Mr. Speaker, I am from Ekiti State, the first state whose National Assembly Caucus has unanimously endorsed the tax bills.”

His remarks sparked an uproar among lawmakers, who vocally opposed the statement, shouting "No, No, No!" in disapproval.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas stepped in to calm the situation, urging Rotimi to stay on topic. The Speaker clarified, “Restrict yourself to the subject matter. We are not discussing tax bills, as this is a very controversial issue. On your behalf, I withdraw the statement.”

Despite Rotimi's apology and retraction of his comment, the lawmakers demanded further action, calling for the withdrawal of the entire report.

Facing mounting pressure, Rotimi acquiesced, stating, “I seek the leave of the Speaker and honourable members to step down the report.”

The incident highlights the contentious nature of the proposed tax reforms, reflecting divisions within the legislature on the subject.
