Activist Mahdi Shehu Speaks Out After Release on Bail
Following his release from custody after meeting a bail requirement of N3 million, Kaduna-based activist and sociopolitical critic Mahdi Shehu has shared his reflections.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Shehu expressed gratitude to his supporters and acknowledged others who remained indifferent or critical during his 12-day detention.
Shehu had been detained for posting a video on social media alleging the presence of French military bases in Nigeria. Authorities claimed the video was misleading and posed a potential threat to national security. However, he was granted bail by the Kaduna State High Court on Thursday.
Reflecting on his experience, Shehu conveyed his appreciation to various groups:
- To those who supported him, he thanked them for their prayers and encouragement.
- To his detractors, he expressed gratitude for challenging him and broadening his perspective.
- To those indifferent to his plight, he acknowledged their silence, suggesting it could shape their future positions in societal matters.
Shehu also expressed regret for not being able to reply to more than 4 million messages on social media while he was in custody.
