Benue State House of Assembly Approves Recruitment of Over 9,000 Teachers

The Benue State House of Assembly has granted approval to the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to proceed with recruiting over 9,000 teachers.

This comes after a temporary suspension of the recruitment process in December due to a dispute between the State Assembly Ad-Hoc Committee, chaired by Hon. Cephas Dyako, and SUBEB’s Executive Chairman, Mrs. Grace Adagba. The committee was tasked with investigating whether the Board had violated existing laws or failed to follow due process.

Following a comprehensive review, the committee cleared the Dr. Adagba-led Board of any wrongdoing and lifted the restriction on teacher recruitment. The report confirmed that the Board was legally empowered to “recruit, appoint, promote, and discipline teaching and non-teaching staff on grade levels 07 and above.”

Out of 74,574 applicants, 48,895 candidates participated in the recently concluded Computer-Based Test (CBT). Those who met the cut-off scores are now being screened as the recruitment process nears completion.

In a statement issued by SUBEB’s information officer, Emmanuel Akese, the Board expressed gratitude to shortlisted candidates for their patience. The statement also assured all applicants of a transparent and efficient process aimed at enhancing the quality of basic education in the state.

The week-long screening exercise is scheduled to run from January 10 to January 16, 2024. Candidates from the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state will be screened on specific dates at the Board’s headquarters.
