CNG Backs Senator Ndume Against Proposed Tax Reform Bills

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed its support for Senator Ali Ndume of the Borno South Senatorial District in his opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bills.

During a courtesy visit to Senator Ndume, CNG National Coordinator Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi pledged the group’s commitment to opposing the controversial reforms. Charanchi highlighted CNG’s ongoing efforts to engage citizens across Northern Nigeria through town hall meetings to raise awareness of the bills' implications.

“The goal is to empower constituents to reach out to their representatives and demand that they reject the proposed reforms,” Charanchi said.

He emphasized the organization’s use of democratic tools to resist the reforms, arguing that the bills threaten the livelihoods of millions of people. Charanchi also urged Northern lawmakers to remain loyal to their constituents and reject the proposals, describing them as ill-timed and influenced by external pressures, such as those from the World Bank.

Charanchi cautioned against lawmakers supporting the reforms for personal or political gain, asserting that such actions would be perceived as a betrayal of the people’s trust.

“Northern lawmakers must never forget that they are in the National Assembly to represent their people’s interests, not to advance policies imposed by external entities,” he stated.

He further called on legislators to stand with their constituents or face the consequences of public rejection. Charanchi reiterated that the collective interest and dignity of the Northern region must be fiercely defended against any policies that undermine the welfare of its people.
