Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan Sentenced in Corruption Case
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in a land corruption case.
The ruling was delivered by an anti-corruption court on Friday in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been in detention since August 2023. The case centers on allegations that during his tenure from 2018 to 2022, Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, received land from a real estate developer in exchange for unlawful benefits.
Khan and Bushra Bibi, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, have denied any wrongdoing. The verdict's announcement had been delayed multiple times, most recently earlier this week, following discussions between Khan’s political party and government officials.
Bushra Bibi, who had been free on bail, was also taken into custody after the court's decision. In a statement, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party expressed skepticism about the case, describing it as lacking merit and confidence in its eventual dismissal.
The case has drawn significant public and political attention in Pakistan, with ongoing developments closely watched by both supporters and critics of the former leader.
