Kano Group Chairman Urges Action on Northern Energy Infrastructure

Dr. Sanusi Balarebe Durumin Zungura, chairman of Kano's "Mu Hadu Mu Gyara" group, has expressed dissatisfaction with recent remarks by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, regarding challenges in repairing northern Nigeria's energy infrastructure.

In an interview with GTR Hausa, Dr. Zungura raised concerns about the minister’s explanation that insecurity has hindered progress on critical transmission lines in the North.

“The Minister of Power should prioritize fixing electricity in the North. If challenges persist, alternative solutions must be explored to ensure equitable access to energy,” Zungura stated.

He emphasized that ensuring security and addressing infrastructure needs are fundamental responsibilities of the federal government. “If insecurity is a barrier, the government must intensify efforts to address it and ensure the restoration of vital energy infrastructure,” he added.

Dr. Zungura highlighted the economic implications of inadequate power supply, warning that businesses in the region are struggling to operate efficiently. “Northern businesses face significant challenges. Relying solely on gas-powered manufacturing is not viable, as it raises production costs and ultimately affects the cost of living,” he noted.

He called on northern senators to advocate for accelerated efforts to resolve the region’s energy challenges and ensure accountability in addressing these issues.

The remarks followed the minister’s appearance at a Senate Committee on Power hearing in Abuja, where he outlined key obstacles in the power sector, including vandalism and the difficulty of repairing damaged transmission lines.

“There is no immediate end to frequent national grid collapses, but the government is working to reduce their occurrence and ensure swift restoration,” Minister Adelabu explained during the session. He added that vandalism remains a significant challenge for the power industry.

Dr. Zungura reiterated the need for collaborative efforts between government officials and regional representatives to address energy challenges and boost economic activities in the North.
