President Biden Calls for Addressing Palestinian Concerns Amid Ceasefire Plans
Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the legitimate concerns of Palestinians as part of efforts to ensure Israel's long-term security and stability.
The statement comes amid ongoing criticism from human rights groups regarding Biden's diplomatic and military support for Israel during its military operations in Gaza. Despite occasional critiques of Netanyahu's policies, Biden has maintained unwavering support for Israel, a key U.S. ally.
On Thursday, Washington announced a ceasefire agreement set to take effect on Sunday between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.
The current escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,200 people and the capture of over 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza, which, according to local health authorities, has resulted in the deaths of at least 46,000 people, widespread displacement, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The United States has long supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for separate states for Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. However, the feasibility of this solution has been challenged by differing perspectives on security and territorial sovereignty.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has maintained that Israel must retain security authority over all areas west of the Jordan River, effectively ruling out the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The International Court of Justice has previously stated that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and its settlement activities are unlawful under international law.
