AAU Students Skip Lectures After EFCC Arrests 47 for Alleged Fraud
Students at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma have reportedly stopped attending lectures following the recent arrest of 47 students by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on suspicion of online fraud.
Fearing further arrests, dozens of students have reportedly fled the school, leaving the campus unusually empty. According to a student identified as Chioma, the usual human and vehicle traffic on campus has disappeared.
On February 15, 2025, EFCC operatives conducted a raid in Ekpoma, targeting suspected online fraudsters. Reports regarding the reason behind the operation remain conflicting:
- Some sources claim the arrests were linked to a fraud syndicate accused of scamming victims of N1.4 billion.
- Others believe the EFCC took interest after a viral video showed students lavishly celebrating their final year exams on January 29, 2025.
The footage showed students:
- Driving luxury cars in a motorcade
- Spraying money and using sirens
- Blocking roads around the institution
The AAU administration had previously warned against such excessive celebrations and even postponed exams scheduled for that day.
The EFCC, in an update on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirmed that 47 suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence linking them to online fraud.
The agency seized:
- 14 exotic cars
- Laptops
- Mobile phones
According to the EFCC, the suspects have made "useful statements" and will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
