Edo State Lawmakers Call for Security Transfers to Tackle Rising Kidnappings

The Edo State House of Assembly has urged the heads of the state’s security agencies to reassign personnel who have served in the same station for more than five years, citing the need for better security management.

This resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary session, following a motion submitted by Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, representing Esan South-East Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawmakers also appealed to the state government to:

  • Mobilize security agencies to conduct extensive operations in forests across the state to curb kidnapping activities.
  • Mandate traditional rulers to reside in their respective domains to strengthen community leadership and enhance security.

Hon. Ojiezele emphasized that the rate of kidnappings and criminal activities in Edo State, particularly in Esan South-East, has become a major concern for residents.

He noted that local business owners and returning residents have increasingly become targets for kidnappings, which has negatively impacted business activities and economic stability.

“The insecurity in the region has discouraged entrepreneurship and placed a strain on livelihoods. Many individuals have been unable to operate their businesses freely due to fear of attacks,” Ojiezele stated.

The lawmakers stressed that proactive security measures—including personnel transfers and increased patrols in forested areas—are essential in addressing these threats.

They also urged traditional leaders to actively engage with their communities, believing their presence would serve as a stabilizing force.

The House reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies and local authorities to ensure that residents can live and work in a safer environment.
