EFCC Takes Over Security at Abuja Federal High Court for Yahaya Bello’s Trial
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken over security at the Federal High Court in Abuja as former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, appears for trial today over alleged fraud.
Heavily armed EFCC agents have blocked a major road leading to the court using one of their official vehicles. The officers, dressed in uniforms with the "EFCC" insignia, have also deployed sniffer dogs and other security measures at the court entrance.
All lawyers and plaintiffs attempting to enter the court are undergoing intense screening, with some being denied access.
- Several lawyers have expressed frustration over the strict security measures, complaining about unnecessary checks despite having no involvement in Bello’s case.
- Plaintiffs with separate cases at different courts have also been protesting the restrictions, making the situation at the gate chaotic.
On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Federal High Court granted Bello bail in the sum of N500 million, with two sureties of the same amount. This followed his not guilty plea to 19 counts of fraud filed by the EFCC.
Bello is accused of being involved in an N80 billion money laundering scheme.
The former governor’s defense is being led by Joseph Daudu, SAN, while the EFCC’s prosecution team is led by Kemi Pinheiro, SAN. The case is being presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite.
