Emir Sanusi Urges Peace Amid Deadly Kano Land Dispute

Following a deadly land dispute between the Rimin Zakara community and Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II has called for patience and peace among residents.

The Emir, who visited the region after returning from a pilgrimage, prayed for the injured and offered condolences to the families of those killed in the conflict.

“We must pray for the souls of the deceased and for strength for their families to bear this loss. May this be the last of such tragic incidents in our community,” he said.

Emir Sanusi urged citizens to avoid violence, emphasizing that bloodshed would not resolve the land dispute.

“When violence erupts, it is our own people who suffer. No amount of destruction or bloodshed will resolve the issue. We must work together to protect lives and property,” he stated.

Acknowledging the complexity of the long-standing land dispute—with both the community and BUK claiming ownership—he stressed the importance of resolving the issue through the legal system.

“This matter should not be complicated. If the case is in court, it must be resolved with clear evidence. We must sit down with all concerned parties to find a lasting solution,” he added.

To facilitate a peaceful resolution, the Emir announced plans to form a committee comprising state officials, BUK representatives, security agencies, and community leaders.

“We will engage the Governor, BUK authorities, and security officials to ensure justice is done. However, if you have sold your land and received compensation, you must accept the reality,” he advised.

Emphasizing the sanctity of human life, Emir Sanusi urged all parties to prioritize peace and unity.

“The life of one individual is more valuable than the entire world. We must work together to ensure such tragedies never happen again. Justice will prevail, and Allah is always with those who stand for the truth,” he stated.

The conflict escalated on Sunday when security personnel, while demolishing buildings on the disputed land, allegedly opened fire on residents, killing four people and injuring several others.

In response, the State Government announced that a committee will be set up to investigate the killings, as confirmed by Comrade Ibrahim Wayya, Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs.
