EU President Ursula von der Leyen Calls for Increased Support for Ukraine
As Ukraine nears the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for greater military and economic support for the country.
Ahead of her scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Monday, von der Leyen emphasized that:
“A free and sovereign Ukraine is in the interest of the entire world.”
She highlighted the urgency of accelerating military aid, especially now that Ukraine’s 2025 budget deficit has been secured.
“We must speed up the immediate delivery of weapons and ammunition,” she stated.
She also announced plans to present a comprehensive EU defense strategy aimed at boosting arms production and strengthening defense capabilities.
Von der Leyen further outlined efforts to enhance energy security for both Ukraine and the EU.
By the end of next year, the goal is to fully integrate Ukraine’s and Moldova’s electricity markets into the EU power grid, reinforcing energy independence.
“Our close partnership is in Ukraine’s interest, but also in Europe’s interest,” she noted.
To mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa will visit Kyiv on Monday to demonstrate the EU’s continued solidarity with Ukraine.
