NNPP’s Isaac Idahosa Calls for Consequences Over Electoral Failures
Isaac Idahosa, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, has stated that INEC and public officials must be held accountable for electoral failures to prevent repeated issues in future elections.
Idahosa made the statement during Wednesday’s episode of Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief.”
He emphasized that a lack of consequences allows electoral shortcomings to persist:
“We don’t punish anybody for what they do; there are no consequences, so they keep on repeating it.
“INEC does this, and nobody puts them in check. Once there are no consequences for actions or inactions, then a repeat will occur because there is no accountability,” he said.
The Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) and the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) were introduced for the 2023 general elections to enhance transparency. However, technical difficulties led to widespread criticism from some politicians and observers.
INEC attributed these challenges to logistical and technical issues, but concerns over electoral credibility remained a central debate.
Idahosa also criticized the growing influence of money in Nigerian politics, expressing concern that some individuals appear to hold more power than institutions:
“Money politicking has taken over the system,” he added.
