Reps Urge Legal Action Over Osun LG Dispute, Condemn Violence
The House of Representatives has urged all aggrieved parties in Osun State’s local government crisis to seek legal redress instead of using forceful means to reclaim power.
This resolution followed a motion sponsored by Bamidele Salam and six other lawmakers during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The House also called on Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to provide legal guidance to all disputing parties regarding the proper judicial process.
According to Hon. Salam, violent clashes erupted in several parts of Osun State on Monday after officials previously removed by a court ruling in November 2022 attempted to reclaim control of local government administrations.
He noted that the unrest resulted in six reported deaths and left many others injured, with some receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Salam expressed concern that if immediate action is not taken, the situation could escalate into a broader security crisis.
The legislator warned against the growing trend of self-help among political players, stressing that it could encourage citizens to disregard legal processes when seeking justice.
He also raised concerns over reports that some dismissed officials were allegedly attempting to forcibly occupy local government secretariats without a court order.
In response to the situation, the House resolved to:
- Condemn all forms of violence, killings, and harassment linked to the dispute.
- Call on security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and DG DSS, to restore law and order in all affected local government areas.
The House emphasized that peaceful resolution through legal channels is the only way to prevent further instability in Osun State.
