U.S. and Russia Vote Against UN Resolution Condemning War in Ukraine

The United States and Russia have both voted against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's war against Ukraine, marking a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, according to CNN.

Monday’s vote, which saw 93 nations supporting the resolution, is seen as a dramatic departure from previous U.S. policy, which had consistently backed Ukraine. The move aligns with efforts by the Trump administration to engage Moscow in peace talks.

Reports indicate that former U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a harsher stance toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, further signaling a shift in diplomatic strategy.

The resolution, backed by Ukraine and European nations, called for:

  • De-escalation of the war
  • An early end to hostilities
  • A peaceful resolution in Ukraine

CNN also reported that the United States introduced a rival resolution at the UN General Assembly, which:

  • Did not recognize Ukraine's territorial integrity
  • Did not explicitly accuse Russia of aggression

Later on Monday, the United States is expected to present the same resolution at the UN Security Council.
