Zamfara Governor Orders Probe Into Fire That Killed 17 Children at Qur'anic School
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the establishment of a commission of inquiry to investigate the fire incident that tragically claimed the lives of 17 children at a Qur'anic school in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, announced the formation of the committee, stating that it will:
- Investigate the root causes of the fire.
- Assess the extent of damages.
- Recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
- Suggest support and compensation for affected families.
The announcement was made through Comrade Suleiman Ahmad Tudu, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Media Office of the SSG.
According to the statement, the commission's findings will help the government implement stronger fire safety protocols in Qur'anic schools and other public spaces across the state, aligning with the national fire safety code.
The committee includes representatives from government agencies, religious bodies, and security forces. Members include:
- Sheikh Ahmad Ibn Umar Kanoma (Special Adviser on Religious Matters & Chairman of the Hisbah Commission).
- Prof. Jafaru Makau Kaura (Ministry of Religious Affairs representative).
- Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology.
- Representatives from the Ministry of Local Government Affairs.
- A Commissioner of Police representative.
- A Department of State Security (DSS) representative.
- Members from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
- Representatives from the Fire Service Department.
- Three Ulama Consultative Council representatives.
- The Secretary of the Ulama Consultative Council, who will serve as the committee’s secretary.
The committee is expected to begin its work immediately, ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation.
The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of students and public institutions, while also providing necessary support to the victims’ families.
