Governor Sim Fubara Pledges Commitment to Democracy Amid Rivers State Crisis

Sim Fubara, the embattled Governor of Rivers State, has reaffirmed his commitment to working with all relevant institutions to uphold democracy in the state.

This statement comes in response to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the six-month suspension of Fubara. The president’s decision aimed to restore stability following a prolonged political conflict between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As part of the intervention, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state’s administrator to oversee governance. Additionally, the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Deputy Governor were suspended in a nationwide address on Tuesday.

In a statement personally signed by him, Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State, saying:

“Our priorities remain the security of lives and property and advancing the well-being and prosperity of Rivers people. Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance has continued—salaries are being paid, and major projects are being executed to move the state forward. Above all, Rivers State remains safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch.”

He urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, emphasizing that his administration would continue to engage with relevant institutions to safeguard democracy and ensure the state’s progress.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he added.
