Northern CAN Extends Eid-el-Fitr Greetings, Condemns Uromi Killings
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has extended warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the successful completion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
In a statement released on Sunday, Northern CAN Chairman Rev. John Joseph Hayab and Secretary Bishop Mohammed Naga described the spiritual observances of Ramadan as deeply significant and fulfilling for all believers who embrace the teachings of the Holy Books.
The statement also addressed the tragic killing of 16 tourists in Uromi, Edo State, expressing profound sorrow over the incident.
"The pain and anguish their families and loved ones must endure are unbearable, and we can only imagine the depth of their suffering. May God grant them comfort, strength, and solace during this darkest of times," CAN stated.
The association strongly condemned the killings, describing them as a stain on humanity.
"This heinous act of violence is a tragedy that should unite us all in outrage and determination to ensure that justice is served. As Christians, we stand in solidarity with the victims’ families, recognizing that this violence is not just an attack on a particular region but on our shared humanity."
Call for Unity and Justice
CAN called for peace, urging an end to violence and retaliation.
"We weep with you, we mourn with you, and we pray with you for an end to this senseless bloodshed. Retaliation is not a solution but a recipe for further chaos and devastation. We urge those advocating counter-reaction to reconsider before taking any action."
The statement also warned against stereotypes and divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that Nigerians must reject religious, ethnic, or regional biases.
"Such divisive rhetoric only fuels more violence and mistrust. Instead, we must work toward a future where every Nigerian can live without fear of violence or persecution, regardless of their location within the federation."
CAN urged the federal government, Edo State government, and security agencies to act decisively in investigating the crime and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
"Authorities must act swiftly and transparently to ensure justice is served," the statement emphasized.
