President Tinubu Defends State of Emergency in Rivers, Citing Security and Economic Risks
President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that the crisis had reached a critical tipping point, endangering key oil and gas infrastructure and threatening Nigeria’s economic stability.
Tinubu commended the National Assembly for approving the emergency measure, emphasizing that it was necessary to restore order after more than 15 months of political turmoil that had paralyzed governance in the state. He specifically praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for prioritizing the safety and well-being of Rivers people over political interests.
He highlighted the legislators' thorough review of classified security reports, stressing that urgent intervention was required to prevent further escalation.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu stated.
In his March 18 national address, Tinubu explained that the near-collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation. He described the emergency measure as a necessary step to protect livelihoods, secure infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.
The president expressed confidence that the six-month emergency period would allow the newly appointed sole administrator to stabilize Rivers State, address fundamental governance issues, and facilitate dialogue among political factions.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace, economic resilience, and equitable development, Tinubu stressed the importance of collaboration between the executive and legislative arms in achieving national stability.
“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he said.
He urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State and thanked Nigerians for their understanding and cooperation during this period.
